Global Warming Skeptics

There exists a global warming controversy today which many people are not aware about. What is in dispute is mainly the nature, the cause, and the consequences of global warming. This debate exists mostly in the popular media. Some global warming skeptics believe that the warming trend that we are currently experiencing is within climatic variations, while many people believe that humans have caused this warming.

Some global warming skeptics believe that the rate and amount of warming we hear about is actually due to poor measurements by scientists. Skeptics also believe that future predictions of global warming are not real or are exagerrated.

In the scientific community however there is a strong consensus that global temperatures have increased in recent decades and that this warming is due in most part to human activity (greenhouse gas emissions). It is widely known that all scientific establishments agree with this statement.

The media has devoted little coverage on global warming before the year 1988, that is the year when global warming started to become a hot topic. This all started with a drought in 1988, many countries though had already started to try and reduce greenhouse gas emissions before 1990.

The finding that the climate has warmed in recent decades and that human activities are already contributing adversely to global climate change has been endorsed by every national science academy that has issued a statement on climate change, including the science academies of all of the major industrialized countries.

One respected skeptic is professor Freeman Dyson who has gained notoriety for his "heretical" views on climate change. While he does acknowledge the mechanism by which man-made greenhouse gasses can influence the climate, he claims current models are way too simplistic to capture what's really going on in the real world.

Another respected global warming skeptic is Bjorn Lomborg who thinks the current approach to global warming is misguided and that the costs of drastic, short-term action are too high. Instead, Bjorn Lomborg thinks we should focus on becoming more adaptable.

Some people simply don't believe that the Earth is undergoing a global warming trend or climate change. Others believe in global warming and climate change, but don't believe that people are responsible. The skeptics who don't believe in global warming at all are the ones who most vehemently attack weather data, the analysis of the climatologists and the predictions of the models.

Anti-global warming skeptics say the placement of some weather stations in urban areas may produce inaccurate measurements.

Global warming skeptics also believe the models used to predict Earth's future under global warming are unreliable. They feel that while the sun, clouds, gases, glaciers and oceans are responsible for weather, so, too, are other factors, including some we don't currently understand. According to global warming skeptics, computer models are merely a guess at what will happen on Earth in the future something climatologists don't deny and an arguably poor guess at that. After all, if we can't accurately predict the weather a week from now, how can we predict the global climate in 100 years?
