Global Warming Statistics
Not only that, but in the past 9 years we have consecutively been experiencing temperatures in the top 25 on record for warmth, and scientists say that this is more then a coincidence. A study was completed by the scientists and researchers at MIT, and the concluded that there has been a 100 percent increase in the intensity and duration of severe storms like hurricanes and tornadoes since the 70's. According to this study these outcomes are due in most part to human activity by the increase in greenhouse gases. The National Climatic Data Centre estimates that there was $100 billion of damage caused by hurricanes that hit the US coast in 2005. Here are some more global warming statistics that are shocking and bring a revelation to many people when they read them. The warmest year that we have on record was 2005. If this keeps up, our grandchildren will have a much harder time in life then we have had. Sea level has risen between 5 and 9 inches in the past 100 years and it is still rising. Just a few feet of rise more, and many US coastal cities and part of Florida will be under water. There have been more hurricanes in 2005 than in any other year we have on record. Researchers believe that this is due to warmer temperatures in the Atlantic ocean. In Europe in 2003 a heat wave that was experienced caused approximately 35,000 deaths. Scientists and researchers agree that the climate is changing faster than any previous time in the past 10,000 years. This statistic is scary because rapid change in a climate can have disastrous effects. It is difficult to predict what our climate will be like in the future due to the fast changes. Statistics show that there are sixteen million brand new cars on the road every year. The majority of these cars are fueled by gasoline which means more greenhouse gases are going to get trapped in our atmosphere. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen from 290 (ppm - parts per million) in 1900 to nearly 400 ppm. The rate of warming is increasing. The 20th century's last two decades were the hottest in 400 years and possibly the warmest for several millennia, according to a number of climate studies. And the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that 11 of the past 12 years are among the dozen warmest since 1850. Arctic ice is rapidly disappearing, and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040 or earlier. Polar bears and indigenous cultures are already suffering from the sea-ice loss.
