Solutions to Global Warming

There is a lot of evidence pointing to the fact that humans are causing global warming by creating greenhouse gases, so what can we do about it to slow down or stop global warming?

You have to take many factors into account it seems. If we stop using fossil fuels many companies, and businesses may go out of business and that would cause havoc for the global economy. Researchers agree that even if we stop creating greenhouse gases today, the Earth will still warm by another degree Fahrenheit or so. It is clear though that what we do from this day forward counts and will make a difference.

According to the IPCC we will need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 80% of what they are on track to be in the next century to reach an acceptable level.

Instead of counting on reducing greenhouse gases in one enormous change in a single area, researchers think we need to start reducing them from a variety of sources with new technologies that will be available in the next few decades.

One of the most important changes would be to be more energy efficient, vehicle fuel economy will be a big factor. We will need an increase in the use of wind and solar power, hydrogen technology, biofuels, and natural gas.

We could also capture the carbon dioxide that is emitted from burning fossil fuels and store it underground, which is called carbon sequestration.

It is clear that we need to reduce the amounts of gases that we put into our atmosphere, and we can also increase the amount of greenhouse gases that we take out of the atmosphere. We can take greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere by planting trees. We will also need to make changes to the way people do farming.

The good news is that there are a lot of options to put us on a path toward a more stable climate.

Here are some other important ways and solutions you and I can help decrease greenhouse gas emissions and slow down global warming:

- Make sure your car is properly tuned up. This allows it to run more efficiently and generate fewer harmful greenhouse gases.

- Walk or ride your bike if possible, or carpool on your way to work. Cars burn fossil fuel, so smaller, more fuel-efficient cars emit less CO2, particularly hybrid cars.

- Turn lights and other appliances off when you're not using them. Even though a light bulb doesn't generate greenhouse gas, the power plant that generates the electricity used by the light bulb probably does. Switch from incandescent light bulbs to fluorescent bulbs, which use less energy and last a lot longer.

- Recycle as much as you can. Garbage that doesn't get recycled ends up in a landfill, generating methane. Recycled goods also require less energy to produce than products made from scratch.

- Plant trees and other plants where you can. Plants take carbon dioxide out of the air and release oxygen.

- Don't burn your garbage. This releases carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons into the atmosphere.

To really stem the emission of greenhouse gases, we need to develop non-fossil fuel energy sources. Hydro-electric power, solar power, hydrogen engines and fuel cells could all create big cuts in greenhouse gases if they were to become more common.

If we all do our little part it can help tremendously, doing each our part is one of the biggest solutions to global warming.

On a grander scale, to really make an impact on the Earth, we will need industries to make greener cars, and to burn less fossil fuels. Many businesses today are switching to natural gas, solar power, and other greener technologies to fuel their businesses. This is great, and it does have an impact on global warming. If everyone does their part, including businesses, the Earth's future will be a lot better.
