What is Global Warming?

glacier meltingGlobal warming happens when the earth heats up, this is obviously due to the rise in temperature. There are many skeptics that say that global warming is a myth, however the facts say otherwise. The earth is heating up, the temperature of the atmosphere and the temperature of the oceans are rising.

Global warming is happening because of several key factors, the first one is greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane. These greenhouse gases trap heat and also light in the atmosphere, this causes the temperature to rise. Pollution from cars and industry is one of the leading causes of carbon dioxide becoming trapped in our atmosphere.

These trapped greenhouse gases are hurting us, and animals and plants too. There are many plants and animals and also people that are having a hard time keeping up with the changes and many are dying.

Global warming can lead to droughts, because of these droughts people are running out of food and water. This is obviously happening in many parts of the world, like Africa for example.

The greenhouse effect happens when the temperature of the earth rises because the sun's heat and light is trapped in the atmosphere. This is like when heat is trapped in a greenhouse or any other closed environment like a car for example. Heat and light get in through the windows of the greenhouse or car and then they are trapped there.

It is the same with our atmosphere, and the more we create greenhouse gases the more heat and light will get trapped in our atmosphere and therefore the temperatures will rise.

The greenhouse effect is actually something the earth needs, without it would be freezing cold on our planet. The greenhouse effect has to be balanced though, we are currently in the process of throwing it completely off balance. Too much of the greenhouse effect will melt the glaciers and cause excessive heat and droughts.

Not only that, the excessive heat causes humidity which can lead to excessive rain in some regions. This can lead to mudslides, and floods. Everything in nature is connected, so if you throw an important part of it out of balance the rest will follow.

earth on fireMany people wonder as to what we can do to stop the warming of the earth. At this point no one is really sure
how to stop it, what people are trying to do is they are trying to lower their carbon footprints on our planet.

Many people argue that the greenhouse effect has fluctuated in history and that the rising and falling of temperatures is normal. While that is true to a certain extent, evidence, statistics and plain old facts argue very solidly that we humans have caused a very high spike in the rising of temperature. Without our burning fossil fuels, and
cutting down forests, the earth today may have had the same temperature models of 100 years ago.

You see, when you cut down forests (and especially rainforests) you deplete the earth of oxygen for one thing, and secondly you increase the amount of rain in some areas and you decrease it in others.

Streams and rivers need trees on the banks, without them they tend to overflow or burst their banks if you will. Many of the earth's best thriving rivers have been badly treated over the years. Rivers and streams and trees are the lifeforce of our planet, and we have done a good job of depleting this source of life.

Trees also help perpetuate the water cycle by returning water vapor back into the atmosphere. Without trees to fill these roles, many former forest lands can quickly become barren deserts.

Removing trees deprives the forest of portions of its canopy, which blocks the sun's rays during the day and holds in heat at night. This disruption leads to more extreme temperatures swings that can be harmful to plants and animals.

Trees also play a critical role in absorbing the greenhouse gases that fuel global warming. Fewer forests means larger amounts of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere and increased speed and severity of global warming.

When the temperature of the earth changes and it does change, it happens gradually, not like it is happening right now. These gradual changes can take hundreds of thousands of years. With the amount of greenhouse gases rising, the Earth's remaining ice sheets like in Greenland and Antarctica are starting to melt. All this extra water will raise sea levels by a lot.

As our global temperature continues to rise, the climate can also change in many unexpected ways. The weather today for example is more extreme then it used to be. Hearing on TV that temperature records have been broken for a particular
area is happening more frequently. The number of extreme weather events is happening all the time, places that never receive snow and now getting snow storms.

Heavy rains are causing massive floods in some countries, where previously flooding was not a big problem.

Climate change also means more intense major storms, this means more rain and more flooding. This extreme weather also means that parts of the Earth will have more droughts and they will be more severe. Many plants, animals, and humans are having a hard time adapting to this new climate model, and chances are that it will get worse before
it gets any better.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, eleven of the twelve hottest years since thermometer readings became available, occurred between the year 1995 and 2006.
